Your water line, from the property line in

The water service line is the pipe that brings water from the City main under the street into your house. In Toronto, the homeowner owns the section from the property line into the house, and the City owns the rest.

In homes built before the mid 1950s, that pipe may still be lead. In others it is old galvanized steel that has rusted inside and choked the flow. Either way, replacing it gives you safer water, better pressure and one less thing to worry about.

We replace the private side of the line to code, size it for how your household uses water today, and tell you how to have the City replace its side at the same time.

Lead pipe replacement

We replace the lead water service pipe on your property with new copper or approved plastic pipe, from the property line to the water meter.

Water service line replacement

Old, leaking or undersized service lines are replaced with a line sized for today's fixtures, appliances and bathrooms.

Galvanized pipe replacement

Galvanized steel supply lines rust from the inside and slowly restrict flow. We replace them inside the house, one section at a time where possible, so you keep water in the rest of the house.

Low water pressure diagnosis

Weak pressure through the whole house usually comes from the service line, a partly closed valve or a failing pressure regulator. We test and find the real cause.

Main shut-off valve replacement

Old main valves seize or will not close fully, which is the last thing you want in an emergency. We replace them with a reliable valve.

Burst water line repair

A broken service line or supply pipe is repaired as an emergency, day or night, with no overtime charges.

Lead water pipes in Toronto

The City of Toronto says lead can be found in water service pipes in homes built before the mid 1950s. Its lead in drinking water page explains how to check your pipe, how to get your water tested, and how to have the City replace its side when you replace yours.

Replacing only one side leaves a lead section in place, so it makes sense to coordinate both. We replace the private side and give you what you need to arrange the City's portion.

Lead is not the only old pipe we see. Many Toronto homes from the early and middle 1900s still have galvanized supply lines, and some homes from about 1995 to 2007 have Kitec, a plastic and aluminum pipe whose brass fittings are known to corrode.

Signs your water line needs replacing

  • Your home was built before the mid 1950s and the service pipe has never been replaced
  • The pipe at the water meter is dull grey, soft and does not attract a magnet
  • Low water pressure through the whole house
  • Rusty or discoloured water, especially first thing in the morning
  • Leaks or damp patches where the water line enters the basement
  • Orange and blue Kitec lines at the water heater or main shut-off

To check for lead, look at the pipe where it enters the house before the water meter. Lead scratches shiny with a coin and does not attract a magnet.

How a water line replacement works

  1. 1

    Inspect and test

We confirm the pipe material, check the pressure and flow, and look at where the line enters the house.

  2. 2

    Flat quote first

You get a fixed price before any work starts, with the route and method explained.

  3. 3

    Permits and locates

We arrange the permit and utility locates the job needs.

  4. 4

    Coordinate with the City

You get what you need to ask the City to replace its side of a lead service at the same time.

  5. 5

    Replace the line

The new line is installed with as little digging as possible, and connected to a new main shut-off where needed.

  6. 6

    Test and flush

We pressure-test the new line, flush it, and check pressure at the taps.

What affects the cost

Every water line is quoted on site after we see the pipe and the route. You approve a flat price before work begins. The main factors are:

  • The length of the line from the property line to the house
  • What it runs under: lawn, driveway, steps or a finished basement
  • Whether trenchless installation is possible or the line has to be dug
  • Whether the main shut-off, meter connection or interior pipe also need replacing
  • Permits and restoring the surface afterwards

There are no dispatch fees or overtime charges. See how our diagnostic and flat pricing works.

Toronto water line questions

How do I know if my Toronto home has a lead water pipe?

Check the pipe where it enters the house at the water meter. Lead is dull grey, soft enough to scratch shiny with a coin, and does not attract a magnet. Homes built before the mid 1950s are the most likely to have one.

Will the City of Toronto replace my lead pipe?

The City replaces the section it owns, from the water main to the property line. The section on your property is the homeowner's responsibility. The City's lead in drinking water page explains how to have its side replaced when you replace yours.

How much does it cost to replace a water line in Toronto?

It depends on the length of the line, what it runs under, whether trenchless installation is possible, and whether the shut-off or interior pipe also need work. We give you a flat price after seeing the line. Our pricing page explains how the diagnostic works.

Why is my water pressure low through the whole house?

The most common causes are an old galvanized or undersized service line, a main valve that is partly closed, or a failing pressure regulator. We test the pressure and flow to find which it is before recommending a replacement.

Is lead in drinking water dangerous?

Health Canada advises keeping lead exposure as low as possible, especially for young children and pregnant people. Until a lead line is replaced, the City recommends running the cold tap before drinking and using a filter certified for lead. Its lead page explains how to get your water tested.

How long does a water line replacement take?

It depends on the length of the line and how it has to be installed. We give you the expected timing with your quote, and you will be without water only while the new line is connected.
