Camera first, then the right fix

Your sewer lateral is the pipe that carries everything from the house to the City sewer under the street. In much of Toronto it is decades old, often clay or cast iron, and it fails slowly: roots get into a joint, a section sags or cracks, and backups start.

We start every sewer job with a camera inspection so you can see the inside of the line. If cleaning is enough, we clean it. If one section is damaged, we repair that section. A full replacement is only recommended when the camera shows the line is past saving.

You see the footage, you get a flat price before any work starts, and you get an honest answer about which option makes sense.

Sewer services in Toronto

From a one-time cleaning to replacing the line, for houses, semis and multi-unit homes.

Sewer camera inspection

A camera is run through the line from a cleanout to find roots, cracks, offsets, sags and collapsed sections. Worth doing before buying an older home or approving any repair.

Sewer line cleaning

Hydro jetting and root cutting clear grease, scale and roots from the main line, restoring full flow without digging.

Sewer backup service

When sewage comes up through a basement floor drain or toilet, we clear the blockage and find out whether it is in your line or the City's.

Sewer line repair

A cracked, offset or root-damaged section is repaired on its own, so you are not paying to replace pipe that is still sound.

Sewer line replacement

When a clay or cast iron lateral is collapsed or failing along its length, we replace it, using trenchless methods where the line allows to spare lawns, driveways and trees.

Drain pipe replacement

Rusted cast iron stacks and drain lines inside the house that have narrowed or cracked are replaced with new pipe, one section at a time.

Why Toronto sewer lines fail

Clay sewer laterals and mature street trees make root intrusion the most common cause of main drain backups in older Toronto neighbourhoods like the Beaches, Leslieville, East York, the Annex and Leaside. Roots find the joints between clay sections, grow inside, and catch everything that goes down the line.

Inside the house, original cast iron stacks rust from the inside and narrow until they block or crack. In homes that have been renovated in stages, it is common to find old cast iron joined to newer plastic pipe.

Summer storms can overload older combined sewers and push water back into basements even when your own line is clear. A backwater valve is the fix for that, and the City of Toronto subsidizes it for eligible homes.

Signs of a sewer line problem

  • Several drains slow or backing up at the same time
  • Water or sewage coming up through the basement floor drain
  • Gurgling from toilets when a sink or washer drains
  • Sewer smell in the basement or yard
  • A main drain that has needed clearing more than once a year
  • Soggy or sunken patches of lawn over the sewer line

Our guide to sewer backup warning signs explains what each one usually means.

How a sewer job works

  1. 1

    Call or book online

The dispatch line is answered live 24/7. If sewage is backing up now, stop using water in the house.

  2. 2

    Camera inspection

We run a camera through the line and show you the footage: where the problem is, how deep, and what it is.

  3. 3

    Options and a flat quote

You get the options, cleaning, a section repair or replacement, each with a fixed price before any work starts.

  4. 4

    Permits and locates

Where digging is needed, we arrange utility locates and any permit the job requires.

  5. 5

    Clean, repair or replace

The work is done with as little digging as the line allows.

  6. 6

    Camera again

We run the camera after the work so you can see the line is clear and sound.

What affects the cost of sewer repair

Every sewer job is quoted after a camera inspection, so the price is based on what is actually in the ground. The main factors are:

  • Whether the line needs cleaning, a section repair or full replacement
  • The length and depth of the line, and the pipe material
  • Where the damage is: under a lawn, a driveway, a porch or the basement floor
  • Whether trenchless repair is possible or the line has to be dug
  • Permits, utility locates and restoring the surface afterwards

Toronto sewer line questions

How much does it cost to replace a sewer line in Toronto?

It depends on the length and depth of the line, what it runs under, whether trenchless repair is possible, and whether only one section needs work. We camera-inspect the line first and give you a flat price before any work starts. Our pricing page explains how the diagnostic works.

Do I need to replace the whole sewer line?

Often not. Many lines only need cleaning and root cutting, or one damaged section repaired. A full replacement makes sense when the camera shows the pipe is collapsed or failing along most of its length.

Who is responsible for the sewer line, me or the City of Toronto?

Generally, the part of the sewer connection on your property is the homeowner's responsibility, and the part under the street belongs to the City. A camera inspection shows where the problem is, so you know whether to call the City through 311.

Do I need a permit to replace my sewer line?

Replacing a sewer line usually needs a plumbing permit, and work on the City-owned section is handled through the City. We will tell you what your job needs and arrange it as part of the work.

Can tree roots be removed from a sewer line?

Yes. Root cutting and hydro jetting clear them, but roots usually grow back through the same joint. If they return quickly, repairing or lining that section is the lasting fix.

What is trenchless sewer repair?

Trenchless repair fixes or replaces the pipe through small access points instead of digging a trench along the whole line. It spares lawns, driveways and trees, but it depends on the condition and route of the pipe, which the camera inspection shows.

Sewage is coming up through my floor drain. What should I do?

Stop using water in the house, including toilets, laundry and dishwashers, keep people away from the water, and call us. We clear the line and check whether the blockage is in your pipe or the City sewer.

Sewer backing up right now?

Stop using water and call the Toronto dispatch line. A real person answers 24/7, and a licensed plumber is sent with an arrival window.
