Clogged drain in Toronto? Here is how we clear it.

Most clogs are a single fixture: a kitchen sink full of grease, a bathroom sink or shower drain packed with hair, or a toilet with something in it that should not be. Those are cleared with a drain snake (an auger) right at the fixture.

When several drains are slow at once, water comes up through the basement floor drain, or the same clog keeps coming back, the problem is usually further down the main line. That is where a drain camera inspection and hydro jetting come in, so the line is properly cleaned instead of just poked through.

Either way, you get a plumber who finds the cause first, gives you a flat quote before any work starts, and leaves the drain flowing.

Drain cleaning services in Toronto

Everything from one slow sink to a backed-up main line, in houses, semis and condos across the city.

Drain snaking

Drain snaking (augering) for sinks, tubs, showers, toilets and floor drains. The fastest fix for a single clog caused by grease, hair, soap or a dropped object.

Drain camera inspection

A waterproof camera is run down the line to find roots, cracks, sags or buildup. You see the footage, so you know exactly where the problem is and what you are paying to fix.

Hydro jetting

High-pressure water scours grease, scale and tree roots off the inside of the pipe. Best for main drains and lines that keep clogging after they have been snaked.

Clogged drain repair

Kitchen sinks, bathroom sinks, shower and tub drains, laundry sinks and toilets. If a trap, tailpiece or old fitting is the real problem, we replace it while we are there.

Main and floor drain cleaning

Water coming up through the basement floor drain usually means the main line is blocked. We clear it from the cleanout and check the line with a camera.

Outdoor drain cleaning

Outdoor and exterior drains, downspout connections and backyard catch basins that pond or back up during heavy rain.

Why Toronto drains clog

A lot of Toronto housing is old. Semis and detached homes in Leslieville, the Beaches, East York and the Annex often still have cast iron stacks that rust and narrow from the inside, and clay sewer laterals with joints that tree roots can grow into. On streets with mature trees, roots are the most common cause of a main drain that keeps backing up.

Downtown condos have different problems: long horizontal kitchen lines that collect grease, and building rules that mean a drain job sometimes needs notice to property management. We work around both.

Heavy summer storms can also overload older combined sewers and push water back up through basement floor drains. If that has happened to you, read about sewer backup warning signs, and ask us about a backwater valve. The City of Toronto's Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy may cover part of the cost for eligible homes.

Signs you need a drain cleaner

  • Water drains slowly from more than one sink, tub or shower
  • Gurgling sounds from drains or the toilet after you run water
  • Water or sewage coming up through the basement floor drain
  • A sewer smell that will not go away
  • The same drain clogs again a few weeks after you cleared it
  • Store-bought drain cleaner no longer helps

One slow drain is usually a local clog. Several at once points to the main line, which needs a camera and proper cleaning, not more chemicals.

What affects the cost of drain cleaning

Every drain is quoted on site after we find the problem, and you approve a flat price before work begins. The main things that change the price are:

  • Which drain is blocked: a single fixture, or the main line
  • How easy it is to reach: an accessible cleanout, or a fixture or toilet that has to be lifted
  • The method needed: a drain snake, or hydro jetting for grease, scale and roots
  • Whether a camera inspection is needed to find the cause
  • Whether the pipe itself is damaged and needs repair

There are no dispatch fees or overtime charges. See how our diagnostic and flat pricing works.

Toronto drain cleaning questions

How much does drain cleaning cost in Toronto?

It depends on which drain is blocked, how easy it is to reach, and whether it needs a snake, hydro jetting or a camera inspection. A plumber diagnoses the problem first and gives you a flat price before any work starts, with no overtime charges. Our pricing page explains how the diagnostic works.

What is the difference between drain snaking and hydro jetting?

Snaking pushes a rotating cable through the clog to break it up, which is ideal for a single sink, tub or toilet. Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to scour the whole inside of the pipe, which removes grease, scale and tree roots and is better for main lines and drains that keep clogging.

Can I see the camera footage of my drain?

Yes. When we run a drain camera inspection, you can watch the footage with the plumber, so you see where the blockage or damage is before deciding on a repair.

Why does my drain keep clogging?

Repeat clogs usually mean the line was only partly cleared, or something in the pipe keeps catching debris: grease buildup, tree roots in a clay lateral, a sag in the line or a rough, rusted cast iron pipe. A camera inspection finds the cause. Our guide on why drains keep clogging covers the common reasons.

Water is coming up through my basement floor drain. What should I do?

Stop running water in the house, including laundry and dishwashers, and call us. Water at the floor drain usually means the main drain is blocked between the house and the city sewer. During a heavy storm it can also be the city sewer backing up, which a backwater valve helps prevent.

Who is responsible for a blocked sewer line in Toronto, me or the City?

Generally, the section of the sewer connection on your property is the homeowner's responsibility, and the section under the street belongs to the City of Toronto. A camera inspection shows where the blockage is, so you know whether to call the City through 311.

Do you clean drains in condos?

Yes. Tell us your building and unit when you book, and whether property management needs notice or proof of insurance before a plumber arrives. We can provide proof of insurance.

Are chemical drain cleaners safe to use?

We do not recommend them. They rarely clear a real blockage, they can damage older pipes and fittings, and they make the job more dangerous for whoever clears the drain afterwards. If a plunger does not work, call a plumber.
