Water heater or hot water tank, we fix both

Torontonians call it a water heater, a hot water heater or a hot water tank. It is the same appliance, and when it stops working you need it back quickly. We repair gas and electric tanks, power-vented and high-efficiency models, and tankless (on-demand) units.

If a repair makes sense, we fix it. If the tank is leaking from the bottom or near the end of its life, we tell you straight and give you a flat price to replace it, whether you want a like-for-like tank, a bigger one or a switch to tankless.

Older Toronto homes often have the heater squeezed into a low basement, and condo suites have compact units in a closet with limited clearance. We check venting, gas supply and access before recommending anything.

Water heater services in Toronto

Repair, replacement and new installations for every common type of residential water heater.

Water heater repair

No hot water, not enough hot water, a pilot that will not stay lit, a tripped element, a leaking pressure-relief valve or strange rumbling. We find the faulty part and fix it.

Hot water tank replacement

When a tank is leaking or worn out, we remove it, install the new one to code with proper venting and shut-offs, and test it before we leave.

Water heater installation

New gas or electric tanks, power-vented and high-efficiency models, sized to how many bathrooms and people the heater has to serve.

Tankless water heater installation

On-demand hot water that frees up floor space, a strong fit for condos and small basements. We confirm the gas line and venting can support it first.

Tankless water heater repair

Error codes, cold-water sandwiches and units that shut off mid-shower. Most come down to scale, ignition or venting, and many need a descale and service.

Rented tank replacement

Many Toronto tanks are rented. If yours has failed or you would rather own one, we can install a tank you own. Check your rental agreement for how the old unit is returned.

Water heaters in Toronto homes

Toronto's water comes from Lake Ontario and is only moderately hard, so scale is less of a problem than in York Region. Age and space are the bigger issues here. Many semis and older detached homes have a rented tank tucked into a tight basement corner, and many condos have compact electric units in a closet.

Larger households and homes with a basement apartment often outgrow a standard 40 or 50 gallon tank. If the hot water runs out halfway through the second shower, the tank may be undersized, half full of sediment, or both.

Not sure whether to repair or replace? Start with the signs your water heater is failing, and if you are weighing your options, our comparison of tankless and tank water heaters.

Signs your water heater needs attention

  • No hot water, or hot water that runs out much faster than it used to
  • Water pooling around the base of the tank
  • Rumbling, popping or banging from the tank as it heats
  • Rusty or discoloured hot water
  • A pressure-relief valve that drips or discharges
  • A tank that is 10 to 12 years old or more

Water at the base of the tank is the one to act on now. Turn off the water supply to the heater and call us before it fails completely.

What affects the cost of a water heater

Every job is quoted on site after we see the heater and the space it sits in. You approve a flat price before work begins. The main factors are:

  • Repair or replacement, and which part has failed
  • Tank or tankless, gas or electric, and the size you need
  • Venting: a standard chimney vent, power vent or direct vent
  • Gas line size and whether it needs upgrading for a tankless unit
  • Access: a tight basement corner or condo closet takes more work

There are no dispatch fees or overtime charges. See how our diagnostic and flat pricing works.

Toronto water heater questions

How long does a hot water tank last?

A conventional tank usually lasts about 10 to 12 years, sometimes longer with regular flushing. Tankless units often last longer, around 15 to 20 years, if they are descaled on schedule. The age is usually printed on the rating plate on the side of the tank.

Should I repair or replace my water heater?

A failed thermostat, element, igniter or valve is usually worth repairing. A tank that leaks from the bottom cannot be repaired, and a tank past about 10 years that needs a major part is often better replaced. We give you a straight answer and a flat price for both options.

How much does a new hot water tank cost in Toronto?

It depends on the type, size and fuel, the venting, and how easy the space is to work in. A plumber looks at your setup and gives you a flat price before any work starts. Our pricing page explains how the diagnostic works.

Is a tankless water heater worth it in Toronto?

Tankless units give endless hot water and save space, which suits condos and small basements. They cost more to install and may need a larger gas line and new venting. If your current tank keeps up and you have the room, a high-efficiency tank can be the better value.

How often should I flush my hot water tank?

Once a year is a good rule. Flushing drains the sediment that settles at the bottom of the tank, which helps it heat efficiently and last longer. Tankless units need descaling on a similar schedule.

My tank is rented. Can you still replace it?

Yes. You can keep renting, or switch to a water heater you own. If you replace a rented tank, check your rental agreement for how the old unit is returned and whether there is a buyout or removal charge from the rental company.

What should I do if my water heater is leaking?

Turn off the cold water supply valve on top of the heater, then turn off the gas or power to it. If water is spreading, shut off the main water valve. Then call us. A small drip from the pressure-relief valve can often be fixed, but a leak from the tank itself means replacement.

Do you install water heaters in condos?

Yes. Tell us your building and unit when you book, and whether property management needs notice, a booked elevator or proof of insurance. We can provide proof of insurance.
