Why York Region homes install water softeners

York Region reports that its water is usually hard or very hard. Hard water leaves white scale on faucets, shower glass and kettles, makes soap lather poorly, and builds up inside water heaters, tankless units and shower valves, shortening their life.

A water softener removes the calcium and magnesium that cause hardness, using resin that is periodically recharged with salt. The result is less scale on fixtures, better lather, and appliances that last longer.

Toronto's Lake Ontario water is only moderately hard, so softeners are less essential there, but many households still add one, or a filter, for taste and fixture care.

Water softener and filtration services

Supply-and-install or install-only, for houses, townhomes and condos.

Water softener installation

The softener is plumbed into the main line where it enters the house, with a bypass valve so it can be serviced without shutting off your water, and a drain line for the regeneration cycle.

Install-only for softeners you bought

Bought a softener at a store or online? We install it to code and set it up, and tell you before we start if anything about the model or space needs attention.

Softener replacement

Old softeners that no longer soften, leak, or use too much salt are removed and replaced with a unit sized to your household.

Whole-house filtration

Sediment and carbon filters installed on the main line, on their own or alongside a softener, for cleaner-tasting water throughout the house.

Reverse osmosis drinking water

Under-sink reverse osmosis systems with a dedicated faucet, for drinking and cooking water. Clean installs in kitchens and condos.

Unsoftened kitchen line

Many households keep one unsoftened cold line to the kitchen for drinking water. We can plumb it in during the install.

What a proper softener install needs

A softener belongs where the main water line enters the house, after the meter and before the water heater, so hot and cold water are both softened. It needs a bypass valve, a drain nearby for the regeneration water, a power outlet for the control valve, and space for the brine tank and salt.

Outdoor hose bibs are usually left on hard water, since softened water is not needed for the garden. Some households also leave the kitchen cold tap unsoftened for drinking.

Sizing depends on how hard your water is and how much your household uses. We size the unit to your home rather than fitting a one-size model. Our guide to hard water in York Region covers the signs and options.

Signs you have hard water

  • White or chalky scale on faucets, shower glass and kettles
  • Spots on dishes and glasses after the dishwasher
  • Soap and shampoo that lather poorly
  • Rumbling or popping from the water heater
  • Shower valves and faucet cartridges that wear out quickly
  • Dry skin or stiff laundry

A simple hardness test tells you how hard your water is, which decides the softener size and settings.

What affects the cost

Every softener job is quoted on site after we see the space. You approve a flat price before work begins. The main factors are:

  • Whether we supply the softener or you do, and its size
  • How easy the main line is to reach, and where the nearest drain and outlet are
  • Adding a whole-house filter, reverse osmosis or an unsoftened kitchen line
  • Removing an old softener or rerouting existing pipes

Water softener questions

Do I need a water softener in York Region?

Many York Region households benefit from one, because the region's water is usually hard or very hard. A softener protects water heaters, faucets and shower valves from scale and makes cleaning easier. A hardness test tells you how hard your water is.

Can you install a water softener I bought myself?

Yes. We do install-only jobs for softeners you supply, as well as supply-and-install. Tell us the model when you book so we can check it suits your space and plumbing.

Where should a water softener be installed?

Where the main water line enters the house, after the meter and before the water heater, with a bypass valve, a nearby drain for regeneration and a power outlet. Outdoor taps are usually left on hard water.

Is softened water safe to drink?

Softened water contains a small amount of added sodium. Many households keep one unsoftened cold tap in the kitchen, or add a reverse osmosis system, for drinking and cooking.

How much does water softener installation cost?

It depends on whether we supply the unit, its size, and how easy the main line, drain and outlet are to reach. You get a flat price before any work starts. Our pricing page explains how the diagnostic works.

How do I maintain a water softener?

Keep the brine tank topped up with salt, check it monthly for salt bridges, and have the system checked periodically. The control valve handles regeneration automatically.
